This website is a multimedia story package that is the final project for JOMC 221.1; an experimental class in the University of North Carolina’s School of Media and Journalism. We were assigned to do a story under the general umbrella of the topic of food. We were responsible for shooting and editing together a 90-second video and creating a compelling graphic to accompany it.
I chose to do mine on perceptions of people who have a gluten intolerance. My future father-in-law was diagnosed with Celiac disease when he was in his late 40’s. He complained about stomach pain for literally decades, but his family members thought he was just being dramatic. That sort of attitude is common, as people view gluten-free as a fad diet for millennials instead of a serious medical condition. Mark is as good an old Southern boy as you can be. He doesn’t fit the stereotype that caused Nick Offerman to say in a Super Bowl ad, “When our idea of danger is eating gluten, there’s trouble afoot.” Mark forever has stabbing stomach pains anytime the road gets bumpy. And for a truck driver, that’s a lot.
